Built in 1929 by Henry A. McLaughlin, 186 Holworthy Street is an American Foursquare that the Cambridge Historical Commission considers significant. The owner wanted to transform the two-family house into one cohesive home with a full third floor and a proper backyard, and to get there without an extensive approval process.

The house was already nonconforming, already exceeding the floor area today's zoning allows, so every square foot had to be accounted for.
