161 Cushing Street - Renovation

Located in a dense Cambridge neighborhood, 161 Cushing Street began as an aging two-family home misaligned with the owner’s lifestyle. Flow Design Architects were commissioned to convert it into a contemporary single-family residence while retaining much of the original structure. This project demanded more than a cosmetic update; it required reorganizing a multi-family layout into a cohesive dwelling while strictly adhering to Cambridge’s Residence B zoning, including floor area, volume, and dimensional controls. Flow carefully evaluated which elements to remove or reconfigure to ensure regulatory compliance. The objective was to maximize living space, introduce modern amenities, and enhance circulation, establishing a strong architectural identity that respects the scale of the surrounding context.
